Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Soul Silver

So I beat Pokémon Yellow (finally - it took me many more tries at the Elite 4 than I remembered, and levelling my party up was much more annoying than I remembered as well) two days before my birthday, and then the next day I got a copy of Soul Silver! (Still haven't caught Mewtwo in Yellow, but I have a Master Ball so it should only be tedious to get to it, not also tedious to catch it.)

Having previously only played Blue and Yellow, Soul Silver is quite a contrast - Wrap, Clamp, and Roar are 100x 500x (changed my mind after discovering clamp now sucks too...) more annoying, but the better menus, the wider variety of monsters, and the more-interesting battle animations are all very nice. (Also, I really like that moves like fury swipes with multiple hits have individual chances of critical for each hit, rather than using the first hit's damage.) Has anybody else jumped straight from 1st gen games to 4th gen? Is there anything in particular I should look forward to (or dread, I guess)? :D

A couple of years ago, I jumped from Pokemon Crystal to Pokemon Diamond, so I know what you're going through. I think that you will enjoy all of the new Wi-Fi features (especially the Global Trading System, so you can finally catch those game-exclusive Pokemon) that Generation IV has to offer. Perhaps it was just me, but I found myself overwhelmed with 492 species of Pokemon - most of which I didn't know their names! - but you will soon get used to it.

The newer Generations have much more meta content. After beating the E4, you can visit the Battle Frontier (which is sort of like a gimmicky set of Gyms in a sense). Also, in HGSS, you can visit the Pokeathlon Dome which abuses the touch screen to no end.

I think that you will enjoy all of the improvements in SS, but be sure not to get overwhelmed!

There's not much that you can do, unfortunately. To make it worse, some Pokemon, like Wobbuffet and Diglett, have inherent abilities that make it impossible for Pokemon on the field to escape or be swapped out. It's not fun. =X

I think I had a lot more trouble finishing Pearl than I did with the first Gen games.

Speaking of first Gen games, I just randomly found my copy of Pokemon Blue in a box in the attic yesterday. o.O;
