Customizing Your Character

In the games that let you customize the player character's appearance, how do you usually go about it? Do you choose their clothes and hairstyle at random? Do you try to make them look like yourself in real life? Do you not bother and just stick with a default appearance?

Same for when it comes to naming your character. Do you pick one at random? Do you use your real name? Do you use a default name?

Effort Values for the EV-intimidated

Effort Values for the EV-intimidated

First, a note: this isn't how it works in Gen 1 or 2, and in Gen 6 it is easier to do Super Training than get EVs from wild Pokémon (though the underlying mechanics are the same). For Gen 3, 4, and 5, however, read on!

Every Pokémon's stats are based on four things: their species' base stats, their nature, their Individual Values (IVs) and their Effort Values (EVs).

Base Stats are pretty easy to understand. They are why even very fast Shuckle are slow and very slow Ninjask are fast. (For that matter, the very fastest Shuckle, at level 100, is slower than the very slowest Sandslash at level 100 and the very slowest Ninjask at level 40.)

Natures are pretty easy too, once you remember that in-game, red is better and blue is worse. (If it helps, remember that in battle, stat-up moves produce a red effect and stat-down moves produce a blue one.)

Individual Values are assigned when a Pokémon first enters a party - whether as an egg or when it's caught in the wild or in Entree Forest. They do not subtract from base stats, and at most add 31 additional points to a stat at level 100. (It is possible to have 31 in every stat, or 0 in every stat.) At level 50, therefore, they only add at most 15 points; at level 20, they only add at most 6 points. This means that for anything other than battling human opponents who care about IVs, they can safely be ignored.

That brings us to Effort Values. The games tell us that a Pokémon who levels up through battle is stronger than one who's leveled up in the Daycare or via Rare Candy. This is true up to a point:

Simplest explanation: you can only get so many EVs. )
There are ways other than battle to get EVs. )
a little bit of math )

Executive summary: You can only get so many EVs, whether through battle, Vitamins, or Super Training. If you use Super Training in Gen 6 effectively enough, you can be Fully-Trained at level 1: at that point you could put it in the Daycare for 99 levels and it would be no weaker than if you'd battled from 1 to 100. In Gen 3, 4, and 5, getting full EVs will involve at least some battles (and thus some exp), but after that point, it doesn't matter how they get the experience.

Pokemon Movie Question

My anime club is showing a pokemon movie for an event we're running later this week, but we're not sure which one we should show. We already showed the first movie some time before, so we'd like to show something else. Do you folks have any suggestions? My friends said that the first four movies are good, and the third one (the Entei one?) was recommended specifically, but more input would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Pokemon Black and Blue!

Have you guys seen this yet?

I took one look and saw a Pikachu holding a sign that says "I support Team Plasma!" I think that speaks for itself.

the skitty

I've been trying to raise a skitty for a while now, but I've been wondering which moves would be best for one.

Right now, she has attract, assist, faint attack, and zen headbutt.
She has high speed and def.

Along with this, could I also inquire about the zorua?
I'm trying to make a duo team of these two.

Thank you in advance.

i was looking for active communitys on here and i found this one

White Forest panic and BW2 squee

So I lost my entire White Forest because my DS Lite suddenly shut down due to my carelessly leaving the C-Gear communications on. And unfortunately, I saved on my Black cart after importing people from there. Is there ANY WAY to get people in my White Forest without being right next to another DS? Like, showing up every day, talking to people, stuff like that?

I'm kinda desperate here, lol.

Naming your Pokemon.

Do you name your Pokemon?

If you do, how do you come up with names? Do you use themes?

I usually pick random names, but playing Black I've started doing themes - right now I've got an Audino called Moneypenny, a Herdier called Mathis and a Purrloin called Xenia - all James Bond characters. (I'm debating what to call M, I'm thinking some kind of bird Pokemon.)

Which are you playing right now?

I just fished out SoulSilver and wiped to start again - I got most of the way through a while back, but I used the Action Replay and had a bunch of cheated pokemon in there, and I want to do a clean run through. (This is where I really wish you could have more than one save per card.)

I'm about 2 hours in, and I've just met Joey and his infamous Rattata...

Which game are you playing? Is it your first go, or a rerun?

Thoughts On Black & White

Hello everyone! It's been a bit since Black & White came out in English, so for everyone who's filling up their Unova Pokédex, how about a post to share your thoughts?

Which version of the game did you get? What do you think of the Unova region and its Pokémon? Were there things in particular that you liked or disliked? Did you like Bianca and Cheren?

Please remember, anyone who wants to leave their friends code in their comments and arrange trades is welcome to do so!

[Nuzlocke]

So I just found this comm, and am somewhat new to DW!

I see lots of discussion of BW, and I'm excited for the games, but carefully not clicking those links! I want it to be a fresh experience!

BUT as far as actually contributing - Nuzlocke runs! Who here is doing them? Who has journals/tags in their journal for their Nuzlocke? Let's share! Or if you've just been keeping things to yourself, how about the most striking thing that's happened in your run? Which rules are you using? Have you cheated at any point because it just hurt too much? Come on, let's support each other in this trying challenge!

[personal profile] houndoom is my Nuzlocke (and future general "hardmode" game challenges) journal, where I'm currently running the challenge on Yellow. I want to see your runs, guys! o/

tiny edit: For those who are all "Wait, Nuzlocke? What's that???" here are the rules! There are lots of "variant" rules that can be found if you Google around, but those are the most basic ones.

Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Soul Silver

So I beat Pokémon Yellow *finally* )

Having previously only played Blue and Yellow, Soul Silver is quite a contrast - Wrap, Clamp, and Roar are 100x 500x (changed my mind after discovering clamp now sucks too...) more annoying, but the better menus, the wider variety of monsters, and the more-interesting battle animations are all very nice. (Also, I really like that moves like fury swipes with multiple hits have individual chances of critical for each hit, rather than using the first hit's damage.) Has anybody else jumped straight from 1st gen games to 4th gen? Is there anything in particular I should look forward to (or dread, I guess)? :D

Back to Johto! HeartGold & SoulSilver

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are out.

Has anyone got theirs yet? What do you think - is it as good as the original? The new features look nice.

What did you think of the Pokéwalker?

Favorite Gym Leader/E4 Trainer

In order to help stimulate DreamWidth, we need much more Pokemon discussion, no?

Anyway, I have an open-ended question for you all: Who is your favorite Gym Leader and/or E4 Trainer? Why do you like them? What is your favorite Pokemon that's on their team? etc. etc.

[Shameless Plug: I encourage you all to follow the meme's example and help stimulate DW by posting in communities of your interest (*cough*this one*cough*)]
